Box Office Guru Wrapup: Treasure Threepeats; Juno Grows Bigger
Meanwhile, P.T. Anderson continues to draw box office blood.

Moviegoers continued to rush to the multiplexes to catch up on holiday holdovers as the North American box office kicked off 2008 with robust ticket sales that were led by mostly the same movies from last week. Nicolas Cage's adventure sequel National Treasure: Book of Secrets remained at number one for the third straight frame, indie darling Juno grew even bigger jumping into third place, and Hollywood's only new release One Missed Call settled for a fifth place finish although its debut was stronger than expected.

Uncovering an estimated $20.2M in its third expedition, the new National Treasure installment retained its box office crown dropping 45% from last weekend. After only 17 days of release, the Disney blockbuster has already grossed a stunning $171M nearly matching the $173M that the first film grossed during its six-month run in theaters. Book of Secrets should surpass that total on Monday or Tuesday and become Cage's top-grossing film ever.

The PG-rated adventure also raced past the studio's own hit Wild Hogs to rank number 12 among all of 2007's blockbuster hits. Secrets should crack the top ten by next weekend joining a long list of other sequels which dominated moviegoing last year. At its current pace, the Cage smash should end up in the neighborhood of $220M domestically. Overseas, Book of Secrets broke through the $100M mark this weekend and stands at a global tally of $271.6M and counting.

There was a tight three-way race for the silver medal this weekend between the last man on earth, a pregnant teen, and a trio of chipmunks. Studio estimates put them within $375,000 of each other and rankings could change on Monday once all of Sunday's votes are counted.

Narrowly taking second place with an estimated $16.4M was Will Smith's superhit I Am Legend dropping 40%. With a towering $228.7M in 24 days, the action hit has become the third biggest blockbuster in the A-list actor's career trailing his mid-90s alien smashes Independence Day ($306.2M) and Men in Black ($250.1M). Legend now ranks as the sixth highest-grossing film of 2007 and the second biggest non-sequel after Transformers ($319.1M). Overseas, the Warner Bros. actioner enjoyed big number one bows in Australia, New Zealand, and Greece and boosted its cume to $170.2M putting the global tally at just under $400M. In North America, Legend seems on course to conclude with $260-270M.

Fox Searchlight gave a major expansion to its runaway hit comedy Juno widening it from 1,019 to 1,925 locations and grossed an estimated $16.2M over the weekend. The per-theater average dipped by only 19% to a sturdy $8,429. Independent films that expand this wide rarely retain such strong averages. Word of mouth has been propelling Juno on the charts and the PG-13 high school tale continues to find new fans, especially with young women. The cume to date shot up to a remarkable $52M with sizable potential still ahead.

Juno now looks set to reach a couple of major milestones at the box office. It will easily surpass the $71.5M of Sideways to become the highest grossing film in company history for Searchlight. At its current pace, the $2.5M-budgeted pregnancy pic will smash through the $100M mark and could go much higher depending on added buzz the film may receive from Golden Globe wins and Oscar nominations. The Ellen Page hit may even challenge Disney's Amy Adams comedy Enchanted to become the top-grossing female-led film of the year.

Right behind with an estimated $16M was Fox's comedy sensation Alvin and the Chipmunks which dropped by 45% in its fourth frame. The PG-rated family film has now collected a massive $176.7M and is less than a week away from surpassing the $183.1M of The Simpsons Movie to become the studio's top-grossing film of 2007. It will also become one of last year's top ten overall blockbusters when it beats Homer and pals. Budgeted at under $70M, Alvin should zoom past the double century mark and finish with $210-220M.

The weekend's only new release found itself with a solid fifth place debut. One Missed Call, a remake of a Japanese horror film, grossed an estimated $13.5M from 2,240 theaters for a strong $6,038 average. The PG-13 film was expected to open with less than $10M. Warner Bros. marketed Call as a creepy thriller for teens and young adults and scored impressive results. Not facing any other new openers also helped.

Why is there so much importance on the "summer blockbuster" in America when it seems releasing around Christmas yields just as high results - particularly when considering the movies released aren't typically on people's radars, and aren't hyped up as much as say Spiderman 3, Pirates etc... Here we have 3 filmss: Alvin and the Chipmunks, I Am Legend, amd National Treasure all scraping in or just around the top 10 mark of 2007, which makes me think if a really hyped up film was released around Christmas, it would surpass it's summer tally easily.

Go watch Ellen Page's recent interview with Letterman.
Prime example of why I love that girl.
Glad Juno and Atonement are doing so well; hopefully Atonement will continue to expand successfully, though I doubt an expansion as large as Juno would work right now. Depending on Golden Globe/Oscar results, it could possibly do business at so many screens, but right now it should just continue its slow expansion.

I'll legitimately surprised at how well some of the holdovers have been doing, but hey, I guess people need their entertainment. And while the top films aren't nearly the best stuff out there [save Juno], I will admit that they're better than some of the movies we'll see released in the coming weeks [just take One Missed Call for example...]

But ENJOY! It looks like movie theaters might actually be back "in" for a little while.
:]

Oh great, a third National Treasure to look forward to. Glad to see Juno making good money. It's one of the most naturally uplifting and emotional films I've seen in years. And funny too.

I agree, I Am Legend was fantastic.
Much more in depth than I thought it would be. Pity my cinema was full of ****ing 12 year olds trying to ensare a willing mate...

Can't believe Book of Secrets though, it looks shocking.

I do not know what the big knock on National Treasure is. I guess maybe because im a history channel nut it appeals to me. I Am Legend was pretty good. Will Smiths performance outshined what I consider a pretty average movie. I think I will go see Juno tomorrow. I hope the tomato rating is warranted unlike suckawolf. Any movie that can make Anthony Hopkins and John Malkovic look (or perhaps sound would be the proper term) like a couple of B-movie hacks is criminal.

Kind of sad when Americans would rather see National Treasure 2 than a lot of the other fine films that are out there right now.

Wow it is amazing to hear people say they cant believe or it is sad National Treasure is doing so well over other fine films. I agree there are some great films out there, but come on. I havent seen any of the new films yet as I am currently deployed, but the average movie goers still are and always will be families. I myself have a family and would not even imagine making my kids sit through Juno (which I want to see) instead National Treasure would get my money because of my children. Im sure Juno will do fantastic without my money, but my wife and I will enjoy it when it comes out on video.

true. i just really wish they could make BETTER family films. Pixar is great at that. But national treasure.... o my gosh. what the h3ck was up with the golden mexican aztec city of gold that was made by indians on the florida coast in south dakota? Don't these stupid script writers know anything about geography? JUNO rocks. just saw it. I am legend was sweet, and satisfied the twelve-year-old boy movie fan that still lives inside of me. He sleeps most of the time.... but awakens whenever a ninja turtle or spiderman comes swinging over the horizon. Alvin.... you couldn't pay me to watch that! the comercial showed chipmunks eating eachother's poop. nough said. I wouldn't even take my kids to something so annoying. it would probably turn their young impressionable minds to......... EAT CHIPMUNK POOP!

Alvin and National Treasure are making criminal amount of money.

They'll both pass the $200 million mark when movies 10 times as good barely get 20% of that.

ok this may not really be the right place to talk about something like this, but what in the world was up with legend's ending? cop-out much?
what's the general consensus on that one?

I Am Legend is extremely overrated and has gotten alot of bad-word-of-mouth around here........I think if they would of stuck to the story all the way through then it would easily have topped 300mil by now, it would have been such a better movie......the first 2/3s is oscar worthy, the last 1/3 is rassy worthy......

I don't see why people argue so much over the box office. You have to realize, which was pointed out by luvincharity, most moviegoers are families. Yes, most the money's going to National Treasure. Is it a great Oscar worthy movie such as Juno and Atonement, No, but it is entertainment for the family. The most we can do is convince our buddies to go out and see juno with us. And look what happends, the little Indie gem is number 3 creepin on 2. That's more than anyone could ask for.

But this is much ado about nothing, I suppose. As for the ending of I Am Legend.. Since the movie is incomparable to the book.. I will have to say it worked for me. The movie was 'meh' but Will Smith was brilliant as always

summer blockbusters are easier to make $ because kids are out of school, people have more money(NOT spending it on christmas presents) and its generally a better chance for the general public to go out. why do you think people get fat over the holidays, they don't DO sh3t.

national treasure 2 was ok, it was better than i thought but its not worth a movie ticket. its a rental, maybe even a free rental. "its sad..." is pretty stupid to say concerning national treasure being more profitable than these other flicks. people, its a no brainer action/adventure. that'll almost ALWAYS make more than the serious, slow movies. quit whining...

i am legend's ending did feel rushed. it did keep the wierd spiritual aspect of the book's ending, but changed it to focus more on a God rather than Smith as a messiah. even though it was rushed, i was satisfied with it. but i understand why others didn't like it. BEOWULF had a better ending. (yeah, i liked beowulf... sue me.)

saw 'there will be blood' this weekend. the cinematography is stunning and the score really ratchets up the tension. The production value here is extremely high. It did feel long to me, but was certainly one of the best-made films I've seen this year. Anderson really got his hands dirty on this one. I would say see it, but expect a meditative film punctuated by ferocious performances and a handful of terrifying scenes. daniel day-lewis is a friggin force of nature.

Vaodsi did you ever read the beowulf poem? Read the poem then watch the movie and see how the movie sucks.
