TED MURPHY

Agrees with the Tomatometer 73% of the time.

Biography: Raised in New England. Graduated from Boston University; for one year worked as a theater and filmcritic for student newspaper. Got sidetracked into working as an archivist specializing in theater and film before heading to NYC. Worked for a time as assistant to former screenwriter Helen Deutsch, then spent years working with writer Helen Rayburn on an unsold biography of the Astaire family. Spent nine years toiling in electronic publishing before serving another seven at Baseline as editor of the BIOS and REVIEWS databases. Am now freelancing and overseeing my own website.
Favorites: My taste is rather eclectic. Everything from screwball comedies (My Man Godfrey, The Awful Truth) to sweeping epics (Out of Africa, The English Patient) to the standard great films (Citizen Kane, All About Eve). Among my guilty pleasures are The Big Chill, Gallipoli and Babe.

Hairspray (1988)

" In many ways, it is perhaps the most palatable of all of Waters' movies. There's a sweetness and naiveté to its essence, yet it also falls completely within Waters' oeuvre." — Murphy's Movie Reviews

Flight 93 (2006)

" Both films serve as a vivid reminder of the heroism of these men and women. Because it involves those left behind, FLIGHT 93 carries more emotional weight, but that may be expected from a movie made for television and designed to appeal to the masses." — Murphy's Movie Reviews

Donnie Darko (2001)

" As with any film of this kind, multiple viewings are in order so that one can sort out the plot strands, admire the craftsmanship, and fully grasp what the writer-director's intentions were. When the film opened in the wake of the events of September 11th" — Murphy's Movie Reviews
