TED MURPHY

Agrees with the Tomatometer 73% of the time.

Biography: Raised in New England. Graduated from Boston University; for one year worked as a theater and filmcritic for student newspaper. Got sidetracked into working as an archivist specializing in theater and film before heading to NYC. Worked for a time as assistant to former screenwriter Helen Deutsch, then spent years working with writer Helen Rayburn on an unsold biography of the Astaire family. Spent nine years toiling in electronic publishing before serving another seven at Baseline as editor of the BIOS and REVIEWS databases. Am now freelancing and overseeing my own website.
Favorites: My taste is rather eclectic. Everything from screwball comedies (My Man Godfrey, The Awful Truth) to sweeping epics (Out of Africa, The English Patient) to the standard great films (Citizen Kane, All About Eve). Among my guilty pleasures are The Big Chill, Gallipoli and Babe.

" While there is undoubtedly a fine movie to be made from Snow Falling on Cedars, this version, despite some of the acting and the photography, is not it." — Hollywood.com

Black Snake Moan (2007)

" Frankly, I'm shocked by the number of critics who have been praising the film. To my mind, the movie doesn't even rate to be called camp. It's simply a bad idea gone wrong." — Murphy's Movie Reviews

Old Joy (2006)

" To my mind, there was a lot of wasted time -- repetitive shots of scenery from a moving car that felt more like padding than "atmosphere," as if the movie makers had to create a feature length for a project that just as easily and perhaps more effect" — Murphy's Movie Reviews
