Kate Mara (born February 27, 1983) is an American television and film actress.

Biography

Mara, who grew up in Bedford, New York, began acting at the age of 9 in a school musical and appeared in numerous theatrical performances while attending several youth theater-arts schools. She began her professional career at age fourteen after getting her first agent, appearing on the television drama Law & Order in 1997 and in the film Random Hearts, directed by Sydney Pollack, in 1999. She graduated from Fox Lane High School early by a year and went on to guest star on numerous television series, including Madigan Men, Ed, and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Recurring parts on the series Everwood, Nip/Tuck, and a large recurring role on the WB Television Network series Jack & Bobby soon followed. Her most recent television appearance is a 6 episode arc on the Fox Network series 24 playing computer analyst Shari Rothenberg.

Mara has appeared in several feature films, most notably the Sundance Film Festival award-winning films Tadpole, alongside Sigourney Weaver, and Joe the King, as well as a small supporting role in Academy Award-winning Brokeback Mountain. She also recently appeared in Zoom with Tim Allen and Courteney Cox.

Kate debuted professionally in 2003 theatrically at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in “Landscape of the Body” with Lili Taylor. She currently lives in both New York and Los Angeles, living bi-coastally, traveling between the two. Further television credits include appearances on CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CSI: Miami, Boston Public, and Cold Case. She also starred in Urban Legends: Bloody Mary which was released in the summer of 2005.

Mara is also known for her singing. She often sings the national anthem at home games of the New York Giants (she is the granddaughter of late Giants owner Wellington Mara as well as the great-granddaughter of Giants founder Tim Mara and Pittsburgh Steelers founder Art Rooney). In fact, she sang the National Anthem for the Sunday Night NFL season opener for the Giants against the Colts in 2006. She recorded an album for the Warner Brothers record label with her band, "Trace." She has sung at NBA all-star games, and was accepted at the New York University Tisch School of the Arts but deferred for 3 consecutive years. Her singing was also featured in the film The Californians, opposite Noah Wyle.

Mara is also a skilled jazz/tap/ballet dancer. She has recently signed with the William Morris Agency and is managed by Washington Square Arts & Film.

Upcoming projects

Mara will appear in the film We Are Marshall starring Matthew McConaughey, which began filming April 2006 and will be released December 22, 2006. The film tells the story of the aftermath of the 1970 Marshall University plane crash. Mara plays head cheerleader Annie Cantrell.

Mara completed Full of It for New Line Cinema, to be released March 9, 2007.

Kate Mara signed on to star in Shooter as Mark Wahlberg's love interest, a drama about a master sniper lured out of retirement to prevent an assassination. Shooter, directed by Antoine Fuqua, is currently filming and is set for a March 16, 2007 release.

Mara has joined the cast of Trans-Siberian, a film by The Machinist director Brad Anderson, that takes place on the Trans-Siberian Railway that runs from China to Moscow. Shooting of the thriller begins in December 2006.
