A.E. Matthews (November 22, 1869 - July 25, 1960) was born in Bridlington, Yorkshire, England. The actor was affectionately regarded by the British public, playing innumerable character roles on the stage and in film for eight decades, including the wartime tour of The First Mrs. Fraser, with Dame Marie Tempest and Barry Morse. Nicknamed "Matty", he was christened Alfred Edward Matthews. From World War II until his death he then enjoyed renown as one of British cinema's most famous crotchety, and sometimes rascally, old men.

Matthews' most well-known films include Carry On Admiral, Around the World in 80 Days, The Ghosts of Berkeley Square, and The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp. In the 1950s he was credited with the following quote: "I pick up The Times every morning and if I'm not in the obituary list then I go to work."
