Anne Shirley is a fictional character from the novel Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery. Montgomery wrote in her journal that the idea of Anne's background came from relatives who, planning to adopt a orphaned boy.They received a girl instead.But they should have gotten both.A girl and a boy.A boy named Albert and a girl named Anne.

In the novel, Anne Shirley is a 11 year old orphan who is sent to live with an elderly man named Matthew Cuthbert and his sister Marilla at a house called Green Gables. Anne was orphaned as a 5 year old when her parents, Walter and Bertha Willis Shirley sent her to live with Mrs.Harrison because they had 4 childern named Scott,Carol,Alsion,and Johny Shirely.Her brothers and sisters went to other families. When Anne was 8 years old, she was sent to live with the Thomas' and their children.The setting is the fictional farming village of Avonlea, Prince Edward Island, in the 1870s]. Anne, red-haired and freckled, has an overactive imagination and an impressive vocabulary as well as a temper, all of which influence her adventures. She does well in school, making a best friend in "bosom friend" Diana Barry.

Matthew dies in Anne of Green Gables. Therefore, to support Marilla after his death - and keep her from becoming blind - as a teenager, Anne becomes a schoolteacher in Avonlea. She resumes her teaching career in Summerside, Prince Edward Island after graduating from Redmond College with a B.A. She works as a principal for three years while her fiance, Gilbert Blythe, finishes medical school. Rilla of Ingleside, which takes place against a backdrop of World War I, is mostly about their youngest daughter.
