Antonio Aguilar is a popular Mexican singer, actor, producer and writer. He is from a small town in Zacatecas called Tayahua and was born on May 17, 1919. This town is close to Villanueva, Zacatecas, Mexico. The story goes that he came to California as an illegal alien and that he slept for three days in the Plazita Olvera or Olvera Street in Los Angeles. He began his acting career during the Golden Era of Mexican Cinematography. He is credited with exposing the sport of la charrerÃa, considered to have originated in Mexico to international audiences.
Antonio Aguilar lived many years in Puerto Rico where he performed in rodeos and concerts. He made many movies and has been compared to American Western actors like Roy Rogers and Gene Autry. This is because Aguilar's charro or cowboy movies entail romantic ballads with him getting the gal. Amongst his best movies are Caballo Prieto Azabache and Bala Perdida. Antonio has appeared in American Western films like 1969's The Undefeated starring John Wayne.
Antonio is married to legendary actress Flor Silvestre, and one of their children, Josè Pepe Aguilar, is among Mexico's most popular modern singers. He frequently performed at the Pico Rivera Sports Arena in Los Angeles before curtailing his performances with Flor Silvestre.
