Total Recall: Brad Pitt's Best Movies
Today he's one of the most bankable movie stars in Hollywood, and one of the few actors audiences will pay to see no matter what sort of role he's playing -- whether it's action, drama, or comedy the script calls for, having Brad Pitt's name above the title is about as close as anyone can come to a guarantee for a hit film. Not so long ago, however, Pitt was just another good-looking dude with enough gumption to work his way into a steady stream of TV shows and bit parts in movies. He's come a long way, for sure, and to celebrate his latest starring role -- in Andrew Dominik's Killing Them Softly, opening this weekend -- we decided the time was right for yet another Brad Pitt edition of Total Recall!

Robert Downey Jr. talks Sherlock Holmes & Iron Man 2 - RT Interview
Robert Downey Jr. can't quite remember why he was on the phone to Guy Ritchie the first time Sherlock Holmes was mentioned, but it was to give him some advice about the trailer for his comic thriller RocknRolla, not to bid for the lead in his $80m Victorian detective caper. But Downey does remember that when the conversation finally swung round that way, Ritchie told him he'd be too old for it anyway.
Nevertheless, within weeks of that chat, a press conference was held in the Freemasons Hall in central London, announcing the news that Downey had signed to play the eccentric sleuth. Just over 12 months later, the film is imminent, and what at first looked like stunt casting now appears to be a stroke of crazy genius. Once a cadaverous codger with a deerstalker hat and fogey pipe, Arthur Conan Doyle's most famous literary creation gets a jolt of adrenaline with Downey's firecracker performance, cutting a psychedelic swathe through the fog of Old London Town.

Box Office Guru Preview: Basterds to Bump Aliens From Top Spot
Studios rush four more films into wide release hoping to grab whatever dollars they can in the final weeks of the summer movie season. Leading the way is Quentin Tarantino's war saga Inglourious Basterds which is the only newcomer targeting mature adults. The director's pal Robert Rodriguez also has a film of his own, but will aim for school kids with the family pic Shorts which features far fewer Nazis. Teen audiences get some choices too with the female-skewing drama Post Grad and the testosterone doc X Games 3D: The Movie. The overall marketplace should once again beat last year's Olympics-affected figures by a sizable margin.

Cannes 2009: Tarantino Talks Basterds
The stars were out in full force to support Inglorious Basterds in Cannes this morning, with writer/director Quentin Tarantino and cast members Brad Pitt, Eli Roth, Diane Kruger and Michael Fassbender (amongst others) facing the press on the Croisette. The film follows the efforts of a team of Jewish-American soldiers, nicknamed 'The Basterds', to venture behind enemy lines to capture, maim and kill as many Nazis as possible, and is Tarantino's tribute to the 'men on a mission' movies popularised in the 1960s and '70s. Eli Roth, who plays the baseball bat-wielding Basterd Donnie Donowitz in the movie, called it "kosher porn" for Jews, claiming that murdering Nazis, "is something that I've fantasised about since I was a kid."

As State of Play readies for release in the UK, director Kevin Macdonald takes us through a gallery of behind-the-scenes stills from the production... "I was sent the script through the end of 2006 and I was somewhat dubious about the idea of turning such a good TV series into a film. Brad Pitt was attached at that time and I went to go and see him to talk about the possibility of doing it and we spent an afternoon chatting about it. What we both agreed on was that to set a film in the world of journalism was a wonderful idea. I've always loved films set in that world because you have a lot of excuses for such wonderful eccentric characters but without the clichés. We also thought that now was the time to make a film about the crisis in journalism and particularly in newspapers. We thought that was an interesting theme."

Paramount Signs Up for a Year of "Living Biblically"
Variety brings news of a book that sounds pretty damn cool ... and the subsequent movie version that'll probably pale by comparison. A.J. Jacobs' upcoming "The Year of Living Biblically: One Man's Humble Quest to Obey the Bible As Literally As Possible" will earn a big-screen version not too long after the book debuts on the shelves next fall.

Fincher Signs on for Double Duty at Paramount & WB
Movie fan favorite David Fincher ("Fight Club," "Seven") has signed with Paramount to (finally) direct a pair of oft-discussed projects, says Variety. First up for the celebrated filmmaker is "Zodiac," which is based on a pair of true crime books about a serial killer who stalked San Francisco in the late 1960's.

Batman Rules the Box Office Roost
Debuting with very strong (albeit not staggering) box office numbers is the long-anticipated return of the Caped Crusader. Christopher Nolan's "Batman Begins" handily hooked the #1 spot at the box office this weekend, hauling in just under $47 million over the three-day frame. Toss in the Wednesday and Thursday numbers and the new-fangled bat-flick stands with a fairly impressive five-day tally of $71.1 million.

The Smith Spouses Demolish the Weekend Box Office
The charismatic superstar pairing of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie kicked a whole lot of box office butt over the past weekend, raking in an extremely impressive $51.1 million from 3,400 theaters. Industry insiders were expecting a solid bow for the semi-romantic action comedy "Mr. & Mrs. Smith," but the movie blew right past the predictions, thanks to a multi-demographic concept, (very) high media visibility, lots of high-end action, and good old-fashioned sex appeal. (Word is that a sequel is presently being discussed.)

Weekend Box Office: It's a Zoo Out There
One week after debuting impressively, yet still behind the juggernaut that is "Revenge of the Sith," "Madagascar" snagged the #1 box office spot in its second weekend of release. (But don't feel too bad for George Lucas' baby; it's now the fastest movie to gross over $300 million.) The DreamWorks animated comedy "Madagascar" beat out a trio of multiplex newcomers to grab the top spot, grossing $28.7 million in its second frame.

Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston Go the Way of Ben and Jen
Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston have formally separated, ending five years of marriage, E! reports. In a joint statement, the couple said they will continue to be on good terms, and their split has nothing to do with reports in the tabloids. Some had linked Pitt to "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" co-star Angelina Jolie.

Box Office: Ocean's Twelve 4th Highest Dec. Opener
If estimates hold, Ocean's Twelve's $40.9M opening will be fourth highest December opener of all time. Only the three Lord of the Ring films have better debuts. Return of the King holds the record with $72.6M, The Two Towers is second with $62M, and The Fellowship of the Ring is third with $47.2M. Ocean's Twelve's $40.9M opening is also better than its predecessor's $38M debut three years ago.
