Christine Baranski (born 2 May 1952) is an American actress.

Early life and career

Baranski was born in Buffalo, New York to Lucien Baranski and Virginia. Her Polish American father edited a Polish language newspaper. She attended Villa Maria Academy for high school and Juilliard for her college education.

Baranski had a scene-stealing role as Cybill Shepherd's hard-drinking friend Maryanne Thorpe in the CBS sitcom Cybill, which ran from 1995 until 1998. She later appeared in the 2000-2001 sitcom Welcome to New York and, with John Larroquette, in the 2003-2004 NBC sitcom Happy Family. Her film credits include Addams Family Values, Chicago (2002), the 2000 live-action adaptation of How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Bowfinger (1999) and The Birdcage (1996). She hosted the May 11, 1996, episode of Saturday Night Live and cameoed in a season 24 episode hosted by Kelsey Grammer. She also appeared in the critically acclaimed movie Cruel Intentions.

Baranski appeared uncredited in the 1999 series Now and Again as the voice of Roger's overbearing wife Ruth, who the viewer never saw.

She was nominated for the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series Emmy every year from 1995 until 1998 for her work on Cybill. She won in 1995. In 1999, she was nominated for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for her role as "Dr. Nora Fairchild" (a parody of Dr. Laura Schlesinger) on Frasier.

Baranski appeared in the title role in the Kennedy Center's production of Mame, which held its last performance on July 2, 2006.
