David Chase (born David DeCesareâ??although some sources list his birth name as David Del Cesareâ??August 22, 1945 in Mount Vernon, New York) is an American television writer, director and producer. He is best known for creating the successful HBO series The Sopranos, about a modern Mafia family living in New Jersey, which debuted in 1999 to almost instant acclaim.

Prior to creating and developing The Sopranos, Chase produced episodes of Northern Exposure and The Rockford Files, among other series. He also worked as a lead writer on The Rockford Files. In 2005, Chase received a Special Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America for his entire body of work.

Chase is an Italian American who grew up in a Baptist family in New Jersey. His daughter Michele DeCesare plays the character Hunter Scangarelo on The Sopranos.

His first original created series was Almost Grown in 1988, with Eve Gordon and Timothy Daly. Its premiere was delayed by the writers' strike, and it never recovered; Chase called it an "unjustly" failed series and it has something of a cult following.
