David Wayne (born Wayne James McMeekan on 30 January 1914 in Traverse City, Michigan; died 9 February 1995 in Santa Monica, California) was a Tony Award-winning Broadway, film, and television actor, with a career spanning nearly half a century. Most often a supporting player, he was memorable as a charming cad opposite Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn in Adam's Rib. Wayne played the child killer, originally portrayed by Peter Lorre, in the 1951 remake of M, a chance to see Wayne in an intriguing leading role. Wayne was also noted for his portrayal of Dr Charles Dutton in the 1971 film version of Michael Crichton's The Andromeda Strain. He also played the "Mad Hatter," one of the recurring villains in the 1960s TV series Batman. He co-starred with Jim Hutton in the 1970s television series Ellery Queen (he played Ellery Queen's widowed father), and Wayne was most recently well-known as the curmudgeonly Dr. Amos Wetherby in the TV series House Calls.
