Dieter Dengler (1938-2001) was the only United States Navy pilot to successfully escape a Pathet Lao prison camp. He later wrote about his experiences in Escape From Laos.

A German-born citizen of the United States, he was the subject of the documentary Little Dieter Needs to Fly (1998) by Werner Herzog. In 2006 Herzog released a dramatized film, entitled Rescue Dawn about Dengler's Vietnam experiences, with Christian Bale playing the lead role.
