Dieter Dengler (1938-2001) was the only United States Navy pilot to successfully escape a Pathet Lao prison camp. He later wrote about his experiences in Escape From Laos.
A German-born citizen of the United States, he was the subject of the documentary Little Dieter Needs to Fly (1998) by Werner Herzog. In 2006 Herzog released a dramatized film, entitled Rescue Dawn about Dengler's Vietnam experiences, with Christian Bale playing the lead role.
Dengler died in February 2001 of Lou Gehrig's Disease, and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
