Paramount Pictures, a unit of Viacom Inc., has signed a definitive agreement to acquire DreamWorks SKG for $1.6 billion in cash and assumption of debt. The deal brings Paramount key assets, including all of DreamWorks' current projects in development. an ongoing production partnership with Steven Spielberg and David Geffen, an exclusive, worldwide distribution agreement with DreamWorks Animation beginning in 2006, DreamWorks' live-action library, DreamWorks' television division and its properties, and exclusive rights to future DreamWorks Animation characters in TV shows.

Richard Pryor Passes Away at 65

Richard Pryor passed away yesterday morning, and while he's probably best remembered for his incendiary stand-up material (as evidenced in 1979's "Live in Concert," 1982's "Live on the Sunset Strip," and 1983's "Here and Now") and his also-incendiary battle with an exploding freebase pipe, I'll always remember the guy as one of my favorite move-time comedians. And I know I'm not alone with that opinion.

Fox has hired sophomore director Rawson Marshall Thurber ("Dodgeball") to helm the upcoming Eddie Murphy comedy "Norbit," according to Variety. Previously titled "Till Death Do Us Part," the comedy is about "a meek guy pressed into marrying a monstrous woman (also played by Murphy). When he subsequently meets the woman of his dreams, he has to figure out a way to be with her."

Screenwriters Jon Hurwitz & Hayden Schlossberg, fresh off the cult fave that is "Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle," have just inked a deal with DreamWorks and Imagine. Their "Johnny Blaze" concept will make its way to your local multiplex with Eddie Murphy in the title role. Described by Variety as an action-comedy about "an old-school rapper who retires and becomes a private eye who solves crimes within the hip-hop world," the flick could be a return to the "grown-up" comedy material that Murphy's been avoiding these days.
