Television screenwriter born in London in 1929.

He is most well known for his adaptation of the Roman saga I, Claudius for the BBC in 1976.

Known as "adaptor-extraordinary," he also adapted for television such literary works as Jane Eyre, Crime and Punishment, David Copperfield, and War and Peace, starring Anthony Hopkins.

He died on the 27th May 1979 of a heart attack. His last screenplay, Private Schulz, was filmed after his death. His widow collected a posthumous writers award from The Royal Television Society for his work on the show in 1982.
