Biography

Early life and career

James Karen was born James Karnufsky in Wilkes-Barre in Northeastern Pennsylvania.

As a young man, Karen was encouraged to be an actor by U.S. Congressman Daniel J. Flood, who was an amateur thespian himself, recruiting him into a production at the Little Theatre of Wilkes-Barre.

He was married, for a time, to recording folk singer Susan Rich.

On the television soap operas, he played Dr. Burke on As the World Turns and was the original Lincoln Tyler on All My Children.

He is perhaps best known for his recurring role on the television series Eight is Enough and for his role in the 1985 horror film The Return of the Living Dead. He is also well-known on the east coast for his 20 years as television and radio spokesman for the Pathmark supermarket chain.

    1. Frank: Let me ask you a question, kid. Did you see that movie Night of the Living Dead?
    2. Freddy: Yeah. That's the one where the corpses start eating the people. Shaw! What about it?
    3. Frank: Did you know that movie was based on a true case?
    4. Freddy: Come on. You're shi**ing me, right?
    5. Frank: I've never been more serious in my life.
    6. Freddy: That's not possible. They showed zombies taking over the world.
    7. Frank: Well, they changed it all around. What really happened was, back in 1969, in Pittsburgh at the VA hospital, there was a chemical spill and all that stuff kind of leaked down into the morgue, it made all the dead bodies kind of jump around as though it was alive.
    8. Freddy: What chemical?
    9. Frank: 245 trioxin, it's called.
