The weekend's other new releases, the action film Shoot 'Em Up and the comedy The Brothers Solomon, both failed to make much of a dent into the typically-slow early September marketplace.

Long story short: James Mangold's pet project, a remake of the semi-classic western "3:10 to Yuma," has had a really rough time getting into production. Sony didn't want the thing, but Lionsgate does. The film will star Russell Crowe and Christian Bale, plus like I said: it's a western. I'm down.

Not very long ago we shared the news that Sony had bailed on James Mangold's attempted remake of "3:10 to Yuma," but now we have good news times two! Not only has Mr. Mangold found some financing, but it looks like he's found someone to co-star with Russell Crowe. And that someone looks to be Christian Bale. Excellent!

Despite having a big star like Russell Crowe attached to his western remake, filmmaker James Mangold will have to find a new studio with which to make "3:10 to Yuma." Put off by the actor's back-end deal, Sony has dropped the project, which means Mr. Mangold has to find a new buyer.
