Box Office Guru Preview: Sandler & Apatow to Score Funny Money
For the second straight Friday, Hollywood studios serve up a new release menu packed with an R-rated comedy, a family-friendly action pic, and a horror entry although the top film will be nothing like last weekend's. The Adam Sandler comedy Funny People leads the way looking to give director Judd Apatow another hit with adult audiences. Pulling in less business will be the kidpic Aliens in the Attic and the fright flick The Collector. But for the fourth consecutive frame, the overall marketplace should lag behind last year's scorching hot July results further eroding the year-to-year gain the industry has enjoyed for most of 2009.

Judd Apatow Knows Funny People
Judd Apatow has a start date for his next directing vehicle -- production on Funny People, a film about "a comedian who has a near-death experience," will begin in September, with Adam Sandler, Eric Bana, Seth Rogen, Jason Schwartzman, Jonah Hill, and Leslie Mann set to star.

Wes Anderson's Hotel Chavalier Won't Preceed Darjeeling In Theaters
Bad news for those of you who are interested in the following: Short films, the work of Wes Anderson, and a minimally-clothed Natalie Portman. It appears Hotel Chavalier, the 13-minute short that has preceded Anderson's The Darjeeling Limited during its festival screenings, will not be shown when Limited hits theaters in late September.

Apatow Takes On Biopics in Walk Hard
Since musical biographies keep sweeping the Oscars every year, it?s about time a comedian took the piss out of them. Judd Apatow is bringing to the screen a comedic version of such hits as Walk the Line and Ray. Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story features John C. Reilly as a musician plagued by inner demons.

The Steve Martin-penned "Shopgirl" (starring Claire Danes, Jason Schwartzman, and Mr. Martin himself) will debut at Toronto, as will Ang Lee's "Brokeback Mountain" (Jake Gyllenhaal & Heath Ledger), David Cronenberg's "A History of Violence" (Viggo Mortensen & Maria Bello), Atom Egoyan's "Where the Truth Lies" (Kevin Bacon & Colin Firth), and "Water," which is the third chapter in Deepa Mehta's controversial "Elemental Trilogy."
