The lighthearted action flick snagged an estimated $56 million from 3,600 theaters, effectively surpassing even the most optimistic of Fox-based predictions. No matter how you look at it, Steven Spielberg's "War of the Worlds" zapped a healthy chunk of change from our pockets during the July 4th weekend. Three-day frame: $64.5 million. Throw in the Monday holiday and the figure rises to $77.6 million. Toss the Wednesday opening and Thursday into the mix and you're looking at a "War" chest worth just over $113 million.

Those who've been waiting patiently to see Jennifer Connelly in the new Asia-to-America remake entitled "Dark Water" can feel free to augment their movie calendars. Disney has decided to move the flick from August 12 to July 8, which pits it up against Fox and their "Fantastic Four." ComingSoon.net shares a press release in which Buena Vista prez Chuck Viane states, "After viewing a recent cut of 'Dark Water,' we were completely blown away by this amazing and powerful film. We felt that it had tremendous across-the-board appeal, and every potential to become one of the big summer films. A July release date seemed like the ideal time to reach the widest possible audience."
