Jennifer Ehle (born December 29 1969) is a stage and screen actress best known for her role as Elizabeth Bennet in the 1995 mini-series Pride and Prejudice.
She was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, USA to English actress Rosemary Harris and American author John Ehle. She spent her childhood between the UK and America, attending 18 schools. She attended the North Carolina School of the Arts before moving to the Central School of Speech and Drama in London. In 1992, she was plucked from the latter by Peter Hall to star in the mini-series The Camomile Lawn. Four years later, her performance as Elizabeth Bennet gained her a BAFTA award. After a stint with the Royal Shakespeare Company, she had her first major film role in Paradise Road. Her success continued as she won critical acclaim and a Tony Award for her 2000 Broadway debut in Tom Stoppard's The Real Thing. Her mother was also nominated for the same award that year (Best Performance by a Leading Actress) for her role in Waiting in the Wings. After a hiatus, she returned to the stage in 2005 in The Philadelphia Story at the Old Vic opposite Kevin Spacey. In June 2006 she starred as Lady Macbeth, opposite Liev Schreiber in The Public Theater's production of Macbeth, as part of the Shakespeare in the Park series.
Forthcoming films include Road to the Sky, an Indian-US co-production directed by Santosh Sivan and Michael Clayton with George Clooney. She is also in Pride and Glory with Edward Norton and Colin Farrell. Alpha Male, directed by Dan Wilde, has been released in the United Kingdom. From October 2006 until March 2007 she will be performing in The Coast of Utopia by Tom Stoppard at the Vivian Beaumont Theater.
Past relationships include Toby Stephens, from The Camomile Lawn, and Colin Firth, Mr Darcy in Pride and Prejudice. She is now married to the writer Michael Ryan and they have a young son, George. They currently reside in upstate New York.
