Five Favorite Films with Joel Schumacher
Veteran director Joel Schumacher has had an eclectic, sometimes distinguished, and never less than colorful career across four decades in Hollywood. Though for some his name is synonymous with the camp excesses of Batman Forever and Batman and Robin, the self-described "street kid from New York" boasts a much deeper and more varied filmography that includes cult gems, blockbuster thrillers and tense, micro genre pieces. With his latest, the heightened home invasion thriller Trespass, starring Nicolas Cage and Nicole Kidman, in theatrical release this week, we spoke candidly with Schumacher about his career. Read on to hear his thoughts on Batman, including how he wanted to direct The Dark Knight and almost cast Nicolas Cage as the Scarecrow, his admiration for Christopher Nolan's films, and his preference for smaller, darker films. A Fix for Schumacher's Inland Saints
Apparently not even Joel Schumacher is immune from project overhauls: Variety reports that his latest project, "Inland Saints," is getting a rewrite so complete that it's gone from the story of "the leader of a dangerous street gang" to "an action horror pic set in a small-town desert wasteland."

Further Reading: Dark Knight is Unforgettable, but Who Remembers James Batman?
The Dark Knight is setting cinemas alight all over the world, but, as Kim Newman discovers, there are other Batman movies that aren't quite so well known... Joel Schumacher Lost in "Lost Boys" Sequel
Fans of '80s movies, cool vampire horror or The Coreys Haim and Feldman have all awaited the possibility of a "Lost Boys 2." But the idea that Warner Brothers might produce it for the straight to DVD market is disheartening. Even the film's director, Joel Schumacher, can't ensure the classic gets a proper theatrical sequel.

Numerologists and Jim Carrey fans will be thrilled to hear that "The Number 23," set for release in February 2007, will be another dark, tunnel-like experience the only light at the end of which is the smiling face of Carrey himself, and possibly that of his leading lady, Virginia Madsen. Holy Box Set, Batman! It's Special Edition Time!
