John William Downer (July 6 1843 – August 2 1915) was the Premier of South Australia from 16 June 1885 until 11 June 1887. He later became one of the inaugural senators for South Australia in the first Parliament of Australia. He later returned to state politics and was a member of the South Australian Legislative Council until his death in 1915. His son Alec and grandson Alexander have also both been Australian Federal politicians.
He was an early supporter of womens suffrage in Australia
