Total Recall: Johnny Depp's Best Movies Opens in new window
He once seemed destined for nothing better or worse than simple teen idolhood, but since escaping from 21 Jump Street in 1990, Johnny Depp has proven himself to be a brave (and mostly pretty astute) chooser of scripts, building an impressive filmography that encompasses everything from black-and-white arthouse fare (Dead Man) to blockbuster Disney trilogies (Pirates of the Caribbean). This weekend, he returns to theaters as the bloodsucking Barnabas Collins in Tim Burton's Dark Shadows, so we thought now would be a fine time to devote a fresh installment of Total Recall to counting down the 10 best-reviewed releases of Depp's 25-year film career. Five Favorite Films with Bruce Robinson Opens in new window
If British writer-director Bruce Robinson had only made one film -- 1987's inimitable comedy Withnail & I -- he would have been assured a place in the annals of cult movie history. And it very nearly became the case, too. When the combined forces of Hunter S. Thompson and Johnny Depp came calling, however, Robinson found himself being made an offer he couldn't refuse. The result is The Rum Diary, a long-gestating passion project for Depp instigated when he and Thompson unearthed an unpublished manuscript from the late gonzo legend's early years as a writer. We sat down with Robinson to talk about the challenge of bringing Thompson's novel to the screen, the weirdness of being back in Hollywood, and how Depp -- who previously tried to bait Robinson to direct Fear and Loathing -- finally lured him into taking on this job. But first, kick back with some lighter fluid and enjoy Robinson's five favorite films. More...

This weekend, he'll gun his way into theaters as John Dillinger in Michael Mann's Public Enemies, so we thought now would be a fine time to devote an installment of Total Recall to counting down the 10 best-reviewed releases of Depp's 25-year film career. As always, we let the Tomatometer do the heavy lifting, arranging our list according to the reviews written by the film critics we all know and love. With a lifetime Tomatometer rating of 63 percent -- not to mention a tendency to throw himself into some pretty far-flung roles -- there are bound to be some hotly contested omissions, but that's just part of what makes these things interesting, right? Toronto Film Fest: Tim Burton's "Corpse Bride" starring Johnny Depp Opens in new window
"Corpse Bride" is yet another exquisitely beautiful Tim Burton creation with witty, dark humor. The color palette is deeper than Burton's previous claymation feature, "The Nightmare Before Christmas," but because it's a Tim Burton film, they're very muted. The character design reminds me a little bit of "Triplets of Bellville," but is, nonetheless, devilishly unique and inspired. The world of the dead, where people are in varying degrees of decomposition and their surroundings and structures are moldy and worn, especially shows Burton's creativity and imagination at work. The images onscreen are so gorgeous that sometimes it looks like a CGI movie. Most of the humor is visual ? like the knife on a dead character being pulled out and used during a fight scene; or the dead bride's conscience being revealed as a maggot living in her hollow skull. The voice acting by Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, and Emily Watson amongst others, overall, is noticeably good. I'm not a fan of musical numbers, but they're not very distracting. The story is simple enough and doesn't get in the way of the visuals. More...

Michael Bay haters (I'm not one of them) can cherish this weekend. His newest explosion-fest, The Island, bombed at the box office with an estimated $4.4M on Friday, according to Showbizdata. It took the third spot behind last Friday's chart toppers, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Wedding Crashers. For the weekend, The Island will likely gross $12-14M, making it the worst debut for a Michael Bay film. His average opening for his last five films is an explosive $36M. His last five films also have a spectacular average gross of $147M; The Island, which has a production budget of $120M, will be lucky to make a third of that. More...

More...
