Joseph "J.R." Russo is an Italian-American mobster and hitman from East Boston, Massachusetts. Russo was the hitman sent to kill mob assassin turned informant Joe "The Animal" Barboza, in California in 1976. It is believed that Uncle Jr. from the HBO television show "The Sopranos" is based on Russo.
