Kathryn Ann Sackhoff (born April 8, 1980 in Portland, Oregon), better known as Katee Sackhoff, is an American actress. She currently stars as Captain Kara "Starbuck" Thrace on the Sci Fi Channel television program Battlestar Galactica. In 2004 she was nominated for a Saturn Award in the "Best Supporting Actress in a Television Series" category for her portrayal of Thrace on the Battlestar Galactica miniseries. In May 2006, she won the Saturn Award for the same role on the Battlestar Galactica series. She had been concurrently nominated in the "Best Supporting Actress on Television" category.

Background

Sackhoff grew up in St. Helens, Oregon. Her mother Mary is an ESL (English as a Second Language) program coordinator and her father Dennis is a land developer. She graduated from Sunset High School in Portland in 1998. She has had roles in films such as Halloween: Resurrection, and in television, including the series The Education of Max Bickford and guest appearances on American programs such as ER and Cold Case. Katee Sackhoff also plays the female lead in the action/scifi movie The Last Sentinel and the psychological thriller White Noise: The Light. In the former she plays a partisan and in the latter a nurse named Sherry Clarke.

Trivia

  • Currently she has 3 tattoos:
  1. On the back of her neck is a Japanese kanji symbol for 'choice' which is rarely seen in the series and one of the reasons she grew her hair longer between the mini-series and Season 2 of Battlestar Galactica.
  2. She has another tattoo of a cross on her back that is covered by large bandages whenever her shoulder is uncovered, such as in the episode "The Farm", or by temporary tattoos as in "Unfinished Business" (when her cross tattoo is covered by a pyramid). This is due to the fact that Christianity does not exist in the show's universe.
  3. She has one tattoo on her left forearm that reads "Bona fiscalia", which means "public property" in Latin. It is visible in numerous episodes.
  • She was involved with swimming until her knee gave her problems and she had to quit.
  • Sackhoff wears a ring on the thumb of one of her hands. This piece of jewelry was written into the Battlestar Galactica series and is said to be Starbuck's engagement ring from Zak Adama.
  • She has a dog named Meatball.
  • She is an accomplished ballet dancer.
  • The mascot of Katee's high school is The Apollos.
  • When Katee decided to quit smoking just before shooting started for Season 3 of Battlestar Galactica, the writers for the show decided to have her character also stop smoking.
