Cannes 2009: Keanu Battles Drug Dealers
Keanu Reeves has signed up to star in an action thriller about the drug trade entitled Cartagena, according to reports coming out of Cannes today. Described by Screen Daily as a cross between The French Connection and Michael Clayton, the film will be set in Columbia and feature Reeves as an undercover agent who becomes embroiled in a conspiracy involving drug dealers and international agents. When Cartagena was previously announced in December, Clive Owen was cast in the lead, so today's news suggests he has left the project.

John Horn of the LA Times delivers an interesting article on the sad state of affairs over at Sony Pictures. Seems that, aside from "Hitch," none of Sony's releases have found an overly receptive audience this year. (For those keeping score, Sony's 2005 releases include "Stealth," "xXx: State of the Union," "Lords of Dogtown," "Bewitched," and that "Deuce Bigalow" sequel.) Also, it seems that "Fun With Dick & Jane" is a merciless money-pit, and that alleged "Sinbad" movie starring Keanu Reeves and "Stealth" director Rob Cohen? Yeah, that project's dead now.

Box Office: Mad Black Woman Rejects Hitch for $22.7M
This was probably not the best movie weekend to coincide with The Academy Awards, which honored Hollywood?s best of 2004. Three of this weekend?s wide debuts were all below 17% on the Tomatometer. Two of them didn?t even have the guts to be screened for critics. However, one of them did claim the top spot at this weekend?s box office. As ?Diary of a Mad, Black Woman? shows, no matter how bad the film, it?s probably better to screen it to critics anyways because of the additional publicity it?ll receive from critics? reviews. ?Diary of a Mad, Black Woman,? also has the extra benefit of Oprah?s recommendation on Jay Leno.
