Loretta Devine Biography

Born in Houston in 1949, actress Loretta Devine rose to fame on-stage in the original Broadway production of Dreamgirls before parlaying her acclaim into a career in film and television. Her first major onscreen role came in 1987, when she was cast as a resident advisor on the Cosby Show-spin-off A Different World. Though she left the series after the first season, it was far from her final gig as a TV series regular.Throughout the early '90s, Devine appeared in small supporting roles in features films such as Class Act and Amos & Andrew as well as a number of TV guest spots on shows ranging from Roc to Picket Fences. In 1995, Devine's career was given a shot in the arm when she was cast as one of the leads in Waiting to Exhale, an ensemble film that proved to be a success with both critics and audiences. More supporting work followed, and in 2000 she was cast as a lead on David E. Kelley's Fox drama Boston Public, a show that would go on to be nominated for multiple Emmys over the course of its four seasons on the air.Devine's career came full-circle in 2006 when she was cast in a small role in the film adaptation of Dreamgirls, the stage musical that launched her career. The following year, she was cast as a regular on ABC's supernatural legal drama Eli Stone. ~ Matthew Tobey, Rovi

Quotes from Loretta Devine's Characters

    1. Madea: See, y'all Christians is somethin'... y'all go pull out that Bible, but y'all don't know which prescripture to use for which situation. You got to find the right prescripture. There's a prescripture that says, 'Let the redeemed of the Lord say so.' Have you been redeemed by the Lord?
    2. Shirley: Yes.
    3. Madea: That's right, so if you've been redeemed by the Lord, and somebody does something to you that you don't like, even yo' kids, you can beat the hell outta them and just say, 'So?' So that's what I'm'a do. I'm'a beat the hell outta them and say, 'So?' And I'm'a bring them over here 'cause you've been redeemed, aight. It makes perfect sense, don't it? Halleluyer! Halleluyer!

    1. Juanita: Juanita: I got a real dead loving here for you now, because I don't know anymore how to avoid my own face wet with my tears! Because I had convinced myself that colored girls have no right to sorrow!
    2. Frank: I guess this is goodbye.
    3. Juanita: Like you've never seen it before.

    1. Reese: Well, after that suicide and what happened to the Mancini girl, now I'm having trouble locating another student, a boy named Damon Brooks. He's been missing for some days now.
    2. Dean Adams: Missing? He's not missing. It's the weekend. He's probably shacked up in some motel, with a girl or a guy or a farm animal. Whatever. Weren't you ever 18?
    3. Reese: Not that kind of 18.

    1. Paul: (a police woman and the dean are taking away all the newspapers from the stand) What do you think you're doing? You can't just come and take every copy here.
    2. Dean Adams: You're the one that wrote this inflammatory piece of rubbish.
    3. Paul: Well actually, the fatuous quotes about being deeply shocked and heartsick. Are yours, Dean Adams?
    4. Dean Adams: Let me tell you something, young man. The only lunatic on this campus is you.
    5. Paul: I'm flattered. Can I quote you on that?
    6. Reese: I have a quote for you. 'U.S. News and World Report', named Pendleton the safest university in this country. And you best believe, I intend to keep it that way.
    7. Paul: Thank you, Reese. I'll make sure, and stick that in the special school safety edition. (Paul walks over to Natalie and Brenda) Hold on a second. How about some interviews, you know? Students react to the tragedy on campus.
    8. Brenda: (smiles) Okay, I am saddened and moved by-
    9. Natalie: (cuts Brenda off) This was someone's life. Did you even spend one minute thinking about that?
    10. Paul: No, I didn't. But because of my story, 3,500 students will. I think that's enough to help me sleep at night.

    1. Juanita/Green: I brought you what joy I found, and I found joy. And then theres that woman who hurt you, and who you left three or four times and then you went back after you put my heart in the bottom of your shoe! [trembling voice] And I didn't have nothing. So, I went to where somebody had something for me. But none of them were you. I got a real dead loving here for you now.
