Luther Ingram (b. November 301944 - Jackson, Tennessee) is a highly rated soul singer and songwriter, whose career was held back by a number of reasons.
His songs featured in the pop and/or R & B charts, even though he worked for a small label, Koko Records, owned by his manager/ producer, Johnny Baylor.
Koko and Baylor were closely associated with the important Memphis-based Stax Records label during the height of its commercial success but both Ingram and Koko suffered from Stax's later legal and financial problems in the mid-70s.
Ingram is best known for his greatest hit, "If Loving You Is Wrong (I Don't Want to Be Right)" , written by Homer Banks, Carl Hampton and Raymond Jackson. The song hit #1 on "Billboard" Magazine's Rhythm & Blues chart, and peaked at #3 on that publication's HOT 100 chart in 1972. Other popular tracks include "Ain't That Loving You (For More Reasons Than One)" and "I'll Be Your Shelter".
He recorded mostly at Stax's Memphis studio and then at Muscle Shoals. He is reported to have suffered from ill-health in recent years.
