Mark Rydell (born March 23, 1934 in New York City) is an American actor, film director and producer.
As director, Rydell's films include The Rose (1979), On Golden Pond (1981) and The River (1984). Rydell began his career as an actor and first became known for his role as Walt Johnson on The Edge of Night and as Jeff Baker on As the World Turns, which he played from 1956 to 1962. In Robert Altman's The Long Goodbye (1973) he won plaudits for his role as the violent Jewish mob kingpin, Marty Augustine. He most recently appeared in Hollywood Ending as Woody Allen's loyal agent to the hypochondriac director {Allen).
Critical opinion of Rydell's work is most aptly summed up by The Guardian, which described him as 'poison behind the camera and dynamite in front of it.'[1]
