Bay's Platinum Backs the Next Jason Flick

"Chocolate" Remains Sweet at the Box Office
Fending off a handful of newcomers this past weekend was "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," and the family-friendly confection proved to have some serious staying power at the box office. Michael Bay haters (I'm not one of them) can cherish this weekend. His newest explosion-fest, The Island, bombed at the box office with an estimated $4.4M on Friday, according to Showbizdata. It took the third spot behind last Friday's chart toppers, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Wedding Crashers. For the weekend, The Island will likely gross $12-14M, making it the worst debut for a Michael Bay film. His average opening for his last five films is an explosive $36M. His last five films also have a spectacular average gross of $147M; The Island, which has a production budget of $120M, will be lucky to make a third of that.

"Charlie" Sells a Lot of Golden Tickets to Snatch the Box Office Prize
Another summer weekend, another massive opening. Knocking "Fantastic Four" out of the number one spot, Tim Burton's "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" pulled in just over $55 million during its first three days of release. Pretty impressive numbers, especially considering how many kiddies were at home with their noses joyously stuck in the brand-new "Harry Potter" book!

Veteran music video director Dave Meyers will helm Rogue Pictures' revisit of Robert Harmon's "The Hitcher," and he'll be doing so from a screenplay penned by Jake Wade Wall, a relative newcomer who just wrote "When a Stranger Calls" for Simon West (also a remake).

No sooner is one remake an opening weekend hit than Michael Bay and his Platinum Dunes partners are press-releasing a new production. As "The Amityville Horror" was enjoying a smashing debut weekend, the Dunes boys announced that their next project will be a remake of Robert Harmon's 1986 cult classic "The Hitcher," which starred C. Thomas Howell as a terrorized motorist and Rutger Hauer as one of the coolest movie villains ever devised.

Michael Bay Contemplates a Transforming Career Move
Ever since Steven Spielberg climbed aboard as executive producer on the Paramount / DreamWorks project "The Transformers," fans have been wondering who the director will be. Buzz earlier this week stated that it was going to be a toss-up between Michael Bay ("Armageddon") and Roland Emmerich ("The Day After Tomorrow"), but Variety reports that the gig may be Bay's ... if he wants it. Based on the extremely popular cartoon and toy characters of the 1980's, this big-screen "Transformers" adaptation is presently scheduled to begin shooting in the fall, and the studios have pegged November '06 for its release.

Paramount Believes in "Superstition"
Seems like screenwriter Neal Marshall Stevens ("13 Ghosts") impressed the Paramount folks with his "Superstition" screenplay. Described by Variety as the story of "a scientifically conducted seance that draws a deadly ghost who shifts reality to account for its existence," the project will go into production via Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes shingle. Stevens based his screenplay on the novel by British author David Ambrose.
