This article concerns Michael Gough, the English character actor. For the American voice actor, see Michael Gough (voice actor).

Michael Gough (born November 23 1917 in Malaya) is an English character actor. He is perhaps best known to international audiences from his recurring role as Alfred Pennyworth in four Batman movies, beginning with Batman (1989). Gough made his film debut in 1947, and has since appeared extensively on British television.

He has guest-starred on the long-running British science fiction television series Doctor Who, most notably as the villain in the serial The Celestial Toymaker. He also appeared in the Doctor Who story Arc of Infinity as Councillor Hedin. He was once married to Anneke Wills, who played the Doctor's companion Polly.

He has cult status among horror fans, because of his frequent appearances in sixties British horror films such as Hammer's Dracula (US: Horror of Dracula, 1958) and The Phantom of the Opera (1962); and Anglo-Amalgamated's Horrors of the Black Museum (1960). His later roles for director Tim Burton, especially 1999's Sleepy Hollow, are best seen as an homage to his early horror career.

Trivia

  • Michael Gough has worked with actor Val Kilmer twice. First in the 1984 comedy spy spoof Top Secret!, then again in 1995's Batman sequel Batman Forever reprising his role as Alfred Pennyworth for a third time. It was Kilmer's only time playing Batman.
  • Gough's first film role was in 1947's Blanche Fury.
  • Won Broadway's 1979 Tony Award as Best Actor (Featured Role - Play) for "Bedroom Farce." He was also nominated in the same category in 1988 for "Breaking the Code."
