Murray Hamilton Biography

Murray Hamilton first stepped on a Broadway stage in 1945; among his subsequent theatrical credits was the original production of Mister Roberts and his Tony-winning stint in 1964's Absence of a Cello. Hamilton's film career began with a minor role in Bright Victory (1951). He often played abrasive, cynical characters, such as the "feller sufferin' from R.O.T.C" in 1958's No Time for Sergeants, but he occasionally essayed good-guy roles, notably as James Stewart's foredoomed partner in The FBI Story (1959). Murray Hamilton is best known to many moviegoers for his role as the bombastic mayor in 1975's Jaws, a role which he won, according to the film's scenarist Carl Gottlieb, thanks to his acute ability "to portray weakness disguised as strength." ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

    2. Chief Martin Brody: Yes?
    3. Mrs. Kintner: [slaps him, starts crying] I just found out...that a girl got killed here last week...and you knew it! You knew there was a shark out there! [starts crying harder] You knew it was dangerous, but you let people go swimming anyway? You knew all those things. But still my boy is dead now. And there's nothing you can do about it. My boy is dead. I wanted you to know that. [leaves with her father]

    1. Mayor Larry Vaughn: Martin, it's all psychological. You yell barracuda, everybody says, 'Huh? What?' You yell shark, we've got a panic on our hands on the Fourth of July.

    1. Mayor Larry Vaughn: Now fellas. This is not the time or the place to perform some kind of a half ass autopsy on a fish. And I'm not going to stand here, and see that thing cut open and see that little Kitner boy spill out all over the dock!

    1. Father Ryan: Father Nuncio and I have seen our share of phenomena, and never once did any of them turn out to be Satanist!

    1. Father Delaney: Oh I see. We're just gonna walk away from it. Has that become the fashion now, to cover up?
    2. Father Ryan: Nothing to walk away from.
    3. Father Delaney: I think it's nonsense!
    4. Father Ryan: There's nothing to cover up.
    5. Father Delaney: I think it's bureaucratical bullsh*t! What do you think I am? I am not some pink cheat seminarian who doesn't know the difference between the supernatural and a bad clam. I am a trained psychotherapist! I went into that house! What I saw there was real, what I felt there was real, and what I heard there was real! Gentlemen, I have a family in my parish that's at great risk! And they are facing real danger.

    1. Father Delaney: I happened to check into the murders and the 20-year-old boy who killed his parents and his four brothers and sisters. When he was at trial, he testified that he heard voices in the house. The voices told him to do it! I was in the house, and I heard the voices, too! And I also felt the presence in the house. There was a presence in that house!
    2. Father Ryan: Half the killers in this country say the same thing. 'The voices. The voices told me to do it.'
    3. Father Delaney: I heard them, Father! I heard voices!
