Five Favorite Films with Joel Schumacher
![]()
Veteran director Joel Schumacher has had an eclectic, sometimes distinguished, and never less than colorful career across four decades in Hollywood. Though for some his name is synonymous with the camp excesses of Batman Forever and Batman and Robin, the self-described "street kid from New York" boasts a much deeper and more varied filmography that includes cult gems, blockbuster thrillers and tense, micro genre pieces. With his latest, the heightened home invasion thriller Trespass, starring Nicolas Cage and Nicole Kidman, in theatrical release this week, we spoke candidly with Schumacher about his career. Read on to hear his thoughts on Batman, including how he wanted to direct The Dark Knight and almost cast Nicolas Cage as the Scarecrow, his admiration for Christopher Nolan's films, and his preference for smaller, darker films. But first, after much agonizing, he laid down his all-time five favorite films.

Cage Unleashes Crazy In Bad Lieutenant Trailer
![]()
Okay, for everyone lamenting Nicolas Cage's decade-long slide into talent-wasting, hairpiece-abusing blockbuster mediocrity -- this one's for you. Below is the production trailer for Werner Herzog's remake of Abel Ferrara's 1992 cult film -- this time called Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans -- with Cage taking on the corrupt, drug-taking cop role made infamous by Harvey Keitel. An aghast Ferrara had fired some unflattering words at Herzog and Cage a while back, but we have to admit, this looks kind of insane in a good way. Or maybe just totally awful -- it's hard to tell with Cage these days. Still, he does seem awake, Herzog's no slouch in wrangling lunatic performances (Kinski's the benchmark, after all); plus, there are lizards, Eva Mendes, Val Kilmer and... breakdancing souls. This could go any way, really.

Box Office Guru Preview: Cage, Roberts, and Rudd Battle For #1 Spot

Three new films roll into North American multiplexes and for the first time in ages, all three have a realistic chance of claiming the number one spot. Comedies have been overperforming this year so a slight edge could go to Paramount's raunchy buddy flick I Love You, Man. Julia Roberts returns with her first major lead role in years with the spy action-comedy Duplicity co-starring Clive Owen. And Nicolas Cage dips into the action well yet again with the doomsday thriller Knowing. The new releases are different enough that they should help the box office climb higher than last week's levels.

Total Recall: Nicolas Cage's Best Movies
![]()
He's one of the most eminently mockable major stars in Hollywood, thanks to his frequently questionable tonsorial choices and evident thirst for somewhat less-than-challenging paycheck gigs, but as much as we love to rib Nicolas Cage, there's no getting around the fact that he's done some very impressive work over the course of his long career. Though many filmgoers will always think of blockbuster action flicks like Con Air, The Rock, and the National Treasure series when they hear Cage's name, he's never been afraid to take on smaller, less conventional projects with less-than-obvious commercial prospects. With his latest effort, Alex Proyas' Knowing, heading to theaters this weekend, we thought now would be the perfect time to count down the best-reviewed movies of Cage's career.
