Oscar Shaw Biography

A bit long in the tooth to play the juvenile lead by 1929, suave, dark-haired Oscar Shaw did just that in his only memorable film, The Cocoanuts (1929). Shaw (real name Schwartz) and co-star Mary Eaton had recently starred in the Broadway musical The Five O'Clock Girl but both were mercilessly upstaged this time by the four Marx Brothers, who were making their much anticipated screen debuts. Shaw was equally unlucky with Marion Davies, who replaced him with Lawrence Gray for the talkie version of Marianne (1929); his screen career never truly recovered. ~ Hans J. Wollstein, Rovi
