Ramesh Sippy (b. 24 November, 1947 in Bombay) is an Indian film director, best known for directing the popular and critically acclaimed film Sholay (Flames).

His father was producer G.P. Sippy, and his son Rohan Sippy is also a film director. His daughter Sheena is married to Shashi Kapoor's son- Kunal Kapoor. [1]. He is twice married, his second marriage being to actress Kiran Juneja. [2]

Ramesh was into films from an early age. He used to visit the sets of the film Sazaa, his father's first film, when he was 6 years old. Ramesh's first film job came when he was 9 years old, when he played Achala Sachdev's son in Shahenshah. He worked in both the production and direction departments in films like Johar-Mehmood in Goa and Mere Sanam, which his father was producing. He worked for 7 years as an assistant before becoming the director of Andaaz, in 1971 Although this was only a moderate success, his second film Seeta Aur Geeta in 1972 was highly successful.

In 1975 he directed Sholay which went on to become one of the biggest hits in Bollywood film history and won him lots of acclaim. He then directed Shaan (1980), Shakti (1982) and Saagar (1985) which were moderately successful. His last three films as a director Barashtachar, Akayla and Zamana Deewana were box office flops.

He has since produced films directed by his son Rohan Sippy which were Kuch Naa Kaho and Bluffmaster as well as Taxi Number 9211.

He also directed a successful television serial Buniyaad which starred the late Mazhar Khan.
