Total Recall: Robert Rodriguez's Best Movies
Since breaking into Hollywood in 1992 with his low-budget masterpiece El Mariachi, Robert Rodriguez has done it all -- and not only in terms of his eclectic filmography, which includes action, sci-fi, horror, comedy, and family-friendly thrills. He's also one of the most hands-on filmmakers in the studio system, assuming editing, composing, and cinematography duties on top of directing, writing, and production. Given all that, we felt it was only right that we honor this weekend's return to the Spy Kids franchise by taking a look back at some of the brightest critical highlights from his career. Box Office Guru Preview: Basterds to Bump Aliens From Top Spot
Studios rush four more films into wide release hoping to grab whatever dollars they can in the final weeks of the summer movie season. Leading the way is Quentin Tarantino's war saga Inglourious Basterds which is the only newcomer targeting mature adults. The director's pal Robert Rodriguez also has a film of his own, but will aim for school kids with the family pic Shorts which features far fewer Nazis. Teen audiences get some choices too with the female-skewing drama Post Grad and the testosterone doc X Games 3D: The Movie. Quentin Tarantino has done a good job explaining to the world what grindhouse is. For a term most people don't know, they get the idea of a double feature of low budget movies with fake trailers in between. Comic-Con 2006: "Grind House" Preview
...Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez have collaborated on other projects before, most visibly on "From Dusk 'Til Dawn," and, of course, "Sin City," where Tarantino directed a segment of the film. But the collaboration on "Grind House" a "true" double feature, seems to go beyond any previous attempts, into the territory of line-blurring, no-holds-barred genre cinema at its finest. The film seeks to capture the style and allure of movies offered in 1970s "grind house" theaters, which often featured exploitation and foreign horror films.
