Rodney Amateau Biography

Writer/producer/director Rod Amateau came up from the radio ranks in the late 1940s, then settled into series television in the early 1950s, after making his film directorial debut with 1951's The Rebel. For many years, Amateau was associated with the TV arm of 20th Century-Fox, where, among many other projects, he was intimately involved with the popular series The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis. In 1965, Amateau served as producer of the one, the only My Mother the Car. Back in theatrical films by the early 1970s, Amateau busied himself with such drive-in fare as Drive In (1976), and co-wrote, co-produced and directed the Peter Sellers comedy Where Does It Hurt? (1972). The last known credit for Rod Amateau is the estimable 1987 romp The Garbage Pail Kids Movie. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
