Rupert Wainwright (born November 30, 1961) is an English film and television director, writer, and actor.
Wainwright was born in Cotswolds, UK and started his film career in the 1980s as an actor. While in his twenties, he wrote and directed a short film called Open Window which gained significant exposure through Columbia Pictures' nonprofit "Discovery Program" alongside 1987 Academy Award winner Ray's Male Heterosexual Dance Hall.Erickson, Hal. Wainwright then started directing television commercials and music videos, working extensively with rap artist MC Hammer. He was behind the lens for several seminal rap videos including Hammer's "U Can't Touch This" and N.W.A.'s "Straight Outta Compton".
His first major film was 1994 Disney release Blank Check. He has since directed several notable films, including surprise hit Stigmata in 1999 and the poorly received remake of The Fog in 2005. He has also continued to work in television, and directed the unaired pilot episode of 2001 CBS series Wolf Lake.
Wainwright is not a prolific director, and as of June 2006 he is not formally attached to any upcoming films.
