Biography
Family & Education
Saif Ali Khan was born into the family of the nawabs of Pataudi. His grandfather, Iftikaar Ali Khan Pataudi, was the Nawab of Pataudi as well as an accomplished cricketer who played for England and then for India as the captain of the team. His father, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, like Nawab of Patuadi Sr., was not only the nawab of Pataudi but also a former captain of the Indian cricket team. His mother, Sharmila Tagore, is a Bengali Indian film actress of note, head of the Indian film censorship board, and a relative of the Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore . Saif is also related to the late Nafisa Joseph. His sister is actress Soha Ali Khan.
He followed in his father's footsteps by being educated at Winchester College, a famous independent school for boys in Winchester, England.
Film Career
Saif made his Bollywood debut in Parampara. His most important role was probably in 1994 with Yeh Dillagi with Kajol and Akshay Kumar which was his first major hit. He then had success with moderate level hits like Main Khiladi Tu Anari (1994), Kachche Dhaage (1999) and Hum Saath-Saath Hain: We Stand United (1999).
His acting career, more or less, went through a relative slump until 2001, when he was cast in Farhan Akhtar's hit film, Dil Chahta Hai. The success of this film firmly established Saif as one of the industry's most bankable stars. He followed it up with memorable performances as a comic eligible bachelor in Kal Ho Naa Ho, a manipulative gangster in Ek Hasina Thi, and a light-hearted cartoonist in Hum Tum. His performance in Hum Tum won him the National Film Award for Best Actor. These commercial successes were followed by a critically acclaimed performance in Parineeta and Salaam Namaste, both of which were also hits in India and overseas. In 2006 Khan played the lead role in the offbeat English-language film Being Cyrus and bagged enormous acclaim for his villainous role in the recently released 'Othello' adaptation Omkara.
Saif was part of a troupe that included Shahrukh Khan, Rani Mukerji, Preity Zinta, Arjun Rampal and Priyanka Chopra, which went on as a successful "Temptations 2004" world tour.
The upcoming Vidhu Vinod Chopra film, Eklavya: The Royal Guard, brings together real life mother and son, Sharmila Tagore and Saif Ali Khan. They will share screen space for the first time since Aashiq Awara.
