Sony is on the move at this year's Cannes Film Festival, as the company has announced the acquisition of Paul W.S. Anderson's remake of "The Long Good Friday." The 1980 original starred Bob Hoskins and Helen Mirren in a story about a crime boss whose real estate plans are derailed by the IRA.

News (via the AP) brings the scoopage on a sequel to Stephen Chow's "Kung Fu Hustle," which did somewhat decent business here in the states -- but those who've seen the flick seem to really love it. "Chow called the movie's $17.1 million box office take in America as of Aug. 18 "not bad," but said, "I hope I can do better in the future."

"Amityville" Scares Up a Solid Opening Weekend

Sure, sure, it was the only wide release to open this past weekend, so obviously "The Amityville Horror" was bound to hit the #1 spot. But what's pleasantly surprising (to the producers, anyway) is the news that the haunted house remake scared up $23.3 million in over 3,300 theaters. Although "Amityville" did come up short of "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and its $28 million opening frame, the filmmakers can take solace in the fact that "Horror" cost less than $20m to produce ... and is therefore (almost) cutting a profit already.

"Kung Fu Hustle" Dominates HK Film Awards With 16 Noms

Stephen Chow's "Kung Fu Hustle" received nominations in 16 of 19 available categories for the 24th Hong Kong Film Awards, Variety reports. The only categories the movie didn't receive a nomination in are supporting actress, original song, and Asian film. Wong Kar Wai's "2046" received 12 noms including those for film and director, and Derek Yee's "One Night in Mongkok" received 11.

The trailer for "Kung Fu Hustle" is up on the Sony site. The film, starring Stephen Chow (who also directs) and Yuen Wah, involves a small-time thief who gets on the wrong side of a fierce gang in pre-revolutionary China. "Kung Fu Hustle" will be released in the states on March 18.

Stephen Chow's "Kung Fu Hustle" is breaking box office records across Asia, Variety reports. On its Dec. 24th opening day in Singapore, "Hustle" set the record as having the biggest opening-day B.O. for a Chinese movie at $250,000, and made more in its opening weekend than Chow's previous effort "Shaolin Soccer" made in its entire run at more than $1M.
