Cannes 2009: Stephen Fry Brings His Liar to the Big Screen

Stephen Fry will bring his novel, The Liar to the big screen with himself in a starring role, Screen International reports. One of Britain's most beloved comedians, Fry wrote The Liar in 1991 and will executive produce the big-screen adaptation. The titular "liar" is Adrian Healey, who narrates the book and is responsible for several erroneous passages in it -- we learn that he's lying to the reader as well as other characters. It's a tale of the unrequited love of his life and meanders from his days in public school through his life as an adult. Fry will play Healey's uncle, while Skins star Nicholas Hoult will lie in the lead. Sir Ian McKellen will also star.

SXSW: "V for Vendetta" Review

"V for Vendetta," which had an advanced screening at South by Southwest Wednesday, is thrilling as cinema but questionable as politics. Well-crafted and often stirring, it's an overtly political action film that makes a few trenchant points, but it's tough to come away from the film with a coherent message. But it's worth seeing nonetheless.

Joe Utichi of FilmFocus got to chat briefly with the always-cool Stephen Fry at the UK premiere of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" (Mr. Fry provides the voice of the Guide), and the affable British chap shared some interesting casting news regarding "V for Vendetta." Based on the graphic novel by Alan Moore, "Vendetta" is being written by Andy and Larry Wachowski ("The Matrix," "Bound") and directed by first-timer James McTeigue.
