Tara was born Tara Loewenstern and took her stage name from her father, Hugo Loewenstern. Hugo was a child prodigy as a saxophonist and was featured in Ripley's Believe It Or Not when he was six years old. He later played with Jack Teagarden, Harry James, and Tommy Dorsey. He and Tara collaborated on some recordings in the past 15 years.
Tara was one of four vocalists with Philip Glass and Leonard Cohen's "Book of Longing" tour. She is currently recording a collection of Glass's music under his direction.
