Terry O'Quinn (born Terrance Quinn on July 15, 1952) is an Emmy Award nominated American actor. As of 2004, he plays the role of John Locke on the popular ABC TV series Lost.
Biography
Early life
O'Quinn was born in Newberry, Michigan. He attended Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, and the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa.
Career
O'Quinn began acting in the 1970s. He has appeared in such films as Tombstone and Heaven's Gate. His most well-known film role was his acclaimed turn as a deranged serial killer in The Stepfather. His early television roles included guest appearances on Earth 2, Moonlighting, Star Trek: The Next Generation (episode The Pegasus), and a recurring role as Rear Admiral Thomas Boone on JAG. In 1995, O'Quinn began a series of guest appearances in shows produced by The X-Files producer Chris Carter. In addition to The X-Files, Carter cast his friend O'Quinn in the TV series Millennium and Harsh Realm as well as in the X-Files movie Fight the Future.
After a string of recurring appearances on Alias (2002-2003), as the intriguing FBI Director Kendall, O'Quinn caught the eye and became a favorite of another television producer, this time J.J. Abrams. Following a seven-episode guest run on The West Wing in 2003 and 2004, O'Quinn got a call from Abrams indicating that the producer wanted to cast him (without any audition needed) in his new television drama Lost, about a group of people stranded on a mysterious island after a plane crash. O'Quinn later admitted on the TV Guide Channel that he didn't have much faith in the series at first, calling it "The Mysterious Gilligan's Island of Dr. Moreau." The mystery - conspiracy theory series proved an immediate success with viewers, and O'Quinn's character - the island's prophet of sorts - is a fan favorite. In July 2005, O'Quinn received an Emmy nomination for best supporting actor in a drama for his work as John Locke on Lost.
Personal life
As of 2005 O'Quinn has been married to his wife, Lori, for 25 years. Most of that time they lived in Finksburg, Maryland, but after Lost began airing the couple decided to follow the example of O'Quinn's co-stars and move to Hawaii, where the series is shot. O'Quinn and his wife are the parents to two sons, Oliver and Hunter who live on the West Coast of the United States.

Trivia
- Terry O'Quinn holds the unique distinction of having played three different characters within the X-Files continuum: Lt. Brian Tillman (1995) "Aubrey"; Darius Michaud (1998) "X-Files: Fight the Future; Unnamed Shadow man (2002) "Trust No 1". If Millennium is viewed as being part of the extended X-Files continuum, as both Lance Henriksen's character of Frank Black[1] and Charles Nelson Reilly's character of Jose Chung have appeared in both shows, then he has played four characters within this extended realm: the above three and the regular Millennium character of Peter Watts.
