Tetchie Agbayani (real name Visitacion Parado) is a Filipina actress who has appeared in a number of international productions as well as many in her own country (sometimes credited as Carol Roberts). She gave up her studies for show business after becoming runner up in the Mutya ng Pilipinas beauty contest in 1979. Nude photos of her in the German edition of Playboy magazine in 1982 caused a controversy in the Philippines.
Several years in Hollywood brought her a few good roles, notably in John Boorman's The Emerald Forest (1985) and an entertaining cameo in The Money Pit (1986), but like many Asian actresses Tetchie found herself limited by stereotyping, leading her to accept parts in critically reviled productions such as Gymkata (1985). Perhaps her best performance was as a geologist in the Australian film Rikky and Pete (1988), directed by Nadia Tass, in which she displayed a gift for comedy.
In 1989 Tetchie returned to the Philippines and took time out from her career to give birth to her daughter, China, and complete her interrupted education, earning a degree in psychology. She is now teaching at St Joseph's College in Quezon City, while still fitting occasional TV and film appearances into her schedule.
