You trudged through January unhappily, clinging desperately to those few "limited release" titles that were finally making their way across the country. But no amount of Alfonso Cuaron ("Children of Men") or Guillermo del Toro ("Pan's Labyrinth") could stave off the 2007 Dumping Ground season filled with the likes of "Code Name: The Cleaner," "Primeval," and "The Hitcher." It continued all throughout February with only a few small pieces of quality cinema to be found scattered across the arid multiplex landscape...
But forget all that, movie-fans, because SPRING is coming! And that means two things to a hardcore movie freak: 1. The Summer Movie Season is just a little bit closer, and 2. LOTS of good movies get released between March and May! So join us in bidding a fond farewell to the early-year dreck-fest and welcome 2007's Spring Movie Season. We begin with March, a frame filled with serial killers, nymphomaniacs, and heroes in a half shell....

This highly-anticipated and sexually-charged follow-up from Craig Brewer ("Hustle & Flow") stars Samuel L. Jackson as a prickly old farmer/bluesman, Christina Ricci as a self-destructive nymphomaniac, and a very large and heavy chain that binds the duo together. The trailer seems to get a solid response from movie-goers, but will its dicey subject matter get in the way of box office success?

If you're a regular visitor to the Tomato patch, then you've already read the reports, savored the trailers, and basked in the early buzz. Arriving with a "summer tentpole"- style media push is "300," helmed by the young director who impressed all of us with his "Dawn of the Dead" remake. Based upon the graphic novel by Frank Miller, "300" stars Gerard Butler as the leader of a stunningly overmatched army that decides to fight back anyway. It might be mindless action mayhem, but "300" looks to be, at the very least, a really slick and unique-looking piece of mindless action mayhem. The flick looks a lot like "Sin City" meets "Gladiator," or as I like to call it ,"the boy version of 'Moulin Rouge'."

Everyone's favorite late-1980s cartoon fad is back! No, not "Transformers," although they're arriving in a few months. For now, it's those pizza-slingin', slang-talkin', classically-named crime-stoppers known as "TMNT." This revisit is a full-on CGI experience, so don't worry about those goofy old suits or the vocal stylings of Corey Feldman. Voice casters include Sarah Michelle Gellar, Patrick Stewart, Chris Evans, Kevin Smith and Zhang Ziyi.

Just the name "Will Ferrell" should be enough to get comedy fans in seats for this figure-skating farce, but dig a little deeper and you'll find about a dozen funny folks: Jon Heder, Will Arnett, Amy Poehler, Romany Malco, Jenna Fischer, William Fichtner, Rob Corddry, and Craig T. Nelson, among others. Of the two directors and four screenwriters ... this is the first feature film for all of 'em. Still, check out that cast! It's Will Ferrell on ice skates!

When a lonely orphan meets up with a mysterious stranger called Wilbur Robinson, anything can happen. And by "anything," I mean a trip into a future that's populated with some seriously freaky folks. This animated adventure from Disney has been percolating for quite some time now, so here's hoping it turns out tasty. The voice cast includes names like Tom Selleck, Angela Bassett, Laurie Metcalf, Tom Kenny, and Harland Williams.

This one's from the production company that gave you "House of Wax," "13 Ghosts" and "Gothika." Whether you consider that an endorsement or a warning is entirely up to you. Here we have two-time Oscar-winner Hilary Swank as a professional debunker of supernatural phenomena who comes up against some biblical craziness she simply can't explain. The six-month release delay might be another unpleasant harbinger. Backup players include Stephen Rea, David Morrissey, and AnnaSophia Robb.

We've been talking about this flick at Rotten Tomatoes since the very first day it was announced ... and now it's here! The long-awaited and latest collaboration between mad movie geniuses Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez finally hits the screens in inevitably splattery fashion. Rodriguez's "Planet Terror" looks to be a nasty little zombie concoction, while Tarantino's "Death Proof" seems like something a little bit ... weirder. Promising two-dozen cool actors, three trailers, two movies and a whole lot of movie-geek brain-candy, this one's got "instant cult classic" written all over it.

Director David Goyer ("Blade: Trinity") is at the helm of this one, which is an Americanized remake of the 2002 Swedish thriller "Den Osynlige." Justin Chatwin plays a young man who ends up dead after a vicious attack in the woods ... but why is his spirit still stuck on Earth -- and completely invisible to everyone around him? The original flick was pretty darn solid, so here's hoping the Hollywood machine hasn't monkeyed with it too much.

There's something to be said for consistency, isn't there? With director Sam Raimi at the helm, a crew of reliable writers, a bunch of very strong actors, and hundreds of technical / special effects wizards all spinning their magic, the "Spider-Man" trilogy seems poised to become one of the best of all time. For the third and possibly final entry we get three whole bad guys: newcomers Sandman and Venom look to be eye-popping spectacles, but what of James Franco's descent into villainy? What will become of the Peter & MJ romance? And who will Bruce Campbell be playing this time around? Find out all this and more when "Spider-Man 3" hits the screens.

You didn't ask for it, you probably groaned about it when you read the news, and you just know you're gonna go see it anyway: the sequel to the ferociously cool sci-fi / horror import "28 Days Later." I could offer a detailed and thorough plot breakdown, but where's the fun in that? Suffice to say that just as London becomes to show some small signs of recovery from the "rage" plague, something really awful happens and the horror begins anew. With original director Danny Boyle staying on board as a producer, I feel a lot more confident about this follow-up than I would if, for example, Fox churned out a cheap quickie for the direct-to-video market. Those desperately trying to stay alive / uninfected include Robert Carlyle, Jeremy Renner, Rose Byrne, and Harold Perrineau.

The first one grossed $484 million worldwide; the second did $920 million around the globe. Could this one hit the billion mark? More importantly, will it be as funny as the last two? The whole colorful gang is back, of course, from Shrek (Mike Myers) and Fiona (Cameron Diaz) to Donkey (Eddie Murphy) and Puss (Antonio Banderas) -- but one of the biggest draws this time around has to be the truckload of newcomers: Amy Poehler as Snow White, Ian McShane as Captain Hook, Amy Sedaris as Cinderella, Eric Idle as Merlin, Maya Rudolph as Rapunzel, John Krasinski as Lancelot, Cheri Oteri as Sleeping Beauty, and ... Justin Timberlake as (the eventual King) Arthur? Will there be enough screen time for this many characters? Lookin' forward to finding out...

So many unanswered questions, so many action scenes to savor, so much Johnny Depp to chuckle at... I've heard a few juicy plot nuggets here and there, but I'm not spilling anything. You just know it'll be packed with high-end kinetic insanity, lots of lush scenery, and a whole bunch of twisty-turny plot contortions. And monsters. Frankly, I cannot wait for this one. Plus, this one's got Chow-Yun Fat!
