Spider-Man 2

When it comes to action flicks, characterization and plausibility usually take a backseat to noise and spectacle. While Spider-Man 2 certainly has many of the latter elements, it also balances them out with much of the former. Directed by Sam Raimi and starring Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst, Spider-Man 2 is a superhero movie critics are not ashamed to admit liking -- and judging from the $373M it grossed at the domestic box office, many moviegoers feel the same. Glenn Whipp of the Los Angeles Daily News hails the movie as the "Best comic book movie ... ever." William Arnold of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer says "it's hard to imagine a more totally engaging follow-up," while USA Today's Mike Clark asserts that the movie "has something for everyone." A critical as well as fan favorite, Spider-Man 2 is 2004's best reviewed movie in the Action/Adventure genre, beating out the likes of Quentin Tarantino's action-packed Kill Bill Vol. 2, Matt Damon's spy flick The Bourne Supremacy, and Guillermo Del Toro's Hellboy.
