The Best Reviewed Drama of 2004

Sideways

To come out ahead in this category is a major achievement, simply because the field is so crowded and the competition tough. But with an intelligent and humorous script, along with an excellent cast to bring the material to life, Alexander Payne's Sideways rose from a field that included The Aviator, Million Dollar Baby, and Finding Neverland to become this year's best reviewed film of the drama genre. Starring Paul Giamatti, Thomas Haden Church, Virginia Madsen, and Sandra Oh, Sideways is being called "the year's best American movie" by Time Magazine's Richard Corliss. New York Times' Manohla Dargis throws in her two cents by saying that this movie is "a reason to maintain hope in the film industry." Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times adds that "Alexander Payne has made four wonderful movies: Citizen Ruth, Election, the Jack Nicholson tragicomedy About Schmidt, and now this." The praises don't stop with those three. Sideways scores a high 96% on the Tomatometer, with an adjusted score of 86.60. Let us know what your pick for this category is here.
