Shaun of the Dead

Gruesome splatterfest or romantic comedy? A series of sight gags or a seamless, at times poignant, drama? Shaun of the Dead, the best reviewed horror film of 2004, is all that and more, serving the most entertaining combination of scares and laughs since Ghostbusters. The film, directed by Edgar Wright and starring Simon Pegg and Kate Ashfield, is "a grisly but sweet ode to friendship, love and the George Romero zombie trilogy," says Carina Chocano of the Los Angeles Times. Ethan Alter of Film Journal International writes, "This is a zombie movie with brains. Or, as the zombies themselves would put it, with braainnnnssss," and Robet K. Elder of the Chicago Tribune says, "Playing the stereotypical twentysomething everyman, Pegg has a disarming fragility that evokes a bit of empathy from anyone ever stuck in a rut." Shaun of the Dead won the approval of 90% of the critics and has an adjusted score of 81.38. Of course, the runner up, Dawn of the Dead, has a similar title, and also features thousands of zombies -- those pesky living dead just keep coming back.
