Hero

A big, bold, beautiful spectacle of a film, Hero takes the martial arts genre to rarified heights with its sheer beauty and almost balletic action. Directed by Zhang Yimou and starring Jet Li, Hero is the best reviewed foreign language film of the year, coming in at 94% on the Tomatometer and with an adjusted score of 85.14. Andrew Wright of The Stranger writes, "Shot for shot, frame for frame, beat for beat, this could very well be one of the most gorgeous films ever made." Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times raves, "Led by director Zhang Yimou and dazzling cinematographer Christopher Doyle, the unseen Hero production team has made what just might be the most artistically sophisticated, most formally beautiful martial arts film the genre has seen." And Steven Rea of the Philadelphia Inquirer writes, "From beginning to end, Hero is a painting in motion, its fight scenes a ballet with blades." The runners up, Maria Full of Grace and Osama, are chilling, powerful portraits of young women struggling to make ends meet in impossible circumstances.
