Brokeback Mountain
"Brokeback Mountain" has received many accolades thus far, from Golden Globe nominations to critics' top ten lists. Add the Golden Tomato Award to its trophy case for being the best-reviewed movie in the romance genre for 2005. Directed by Ang Lee and starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger, "Brokeback Mountain" tells the story of two cowboys who meet while working as ranch-hands. Over the years, their friendship eventually evolves into something more intimate, overwhelming them both with its strength and urgency until they can no longer deny, or resist, what exists between them. With an adjusted score of 79.37 and an 88% on the Tomatometer, "Brokeback Mountain" was called "an American masterpiece" by Rex Reed of the New York Observer and "the most poignant movie love story of the year" by Bill Muller of the Arizona Republic.
There's a good reason why Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" has been adapted into movies numerous times: it's a classic love story between two people who couldn't be more different, yet couldn't be more right for each other. With an adjusted score of 77.92 and a Tomatometer of 86%, this period piece "captures much of the wit and crisp emotional longing of the book," according to David Munro of the Fresno Bee. There you have it folks, a classic tale that continues its enchantment, with the fiery Keira Knightley carrying the torch as Elizabeth Bennet.
A story of two young women whose friendship develops into something deeper over the course of one summer, the indie film "My Summer of Love" beats out a host of larger profile movies such as "Must Love Dogs," "Fever Pitch," and "Just Like Heaven" to take third place. Like "Brokeback Mountain," it transcends its gay themes to achieve universality, as Terry Lawson of the Detroit Free Press asserted that it "effectively captures the first flush of teenage infatuation and passion that will resonate with anyone, of any sex." "My Summer of Love" has an adjusted score of 76.47 and a 90% rating on the Tomatometer.
