         Beetlejuice
Beetlejuice
A newly dead suburban couple enlists the help of a screwball "bio-exorcist" to get rid of the pretentious, dysfunctional family who've moved into their old house. It's classic Tim Burton -- morbid zaniness, dark humor, inventive stop-motion animation, and a twisted fondness for all things undead. A pre-"Batman" Michael Keaton shines as the manic, ghastly people-exorcist Beetlejuice, while Winona Ryder's sensitive goth teenager and spectral heroes Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin as the newbie ghosts provide the heartwarming, (after)life-affirming touch of humanity at the core of every Burton film. Rated PG!

Starring: Geena Davis, Alec Baldwin, Michael Keaton
Directed by: Tim Burton

         Doom
Doom
Everything you need to know about "Doom" can be derived from its source material. The latest in a recent run of video-game-to-film adaptations, "Doom" stars The Rock and Karl Urban as Marines sent to a research station on Mars to investigate a distress call. As we can expect, once they get there, all hell breaks loose. Not to sound the death knell for this movie too early, but good movies based on video games can arguably be counted on one hand and the nausea-inducing POV scenes shown in the trailer will have audiences looking for the off button.

Starring: Karl Urban, Rosamund Pike, Dwayne Johnson
Directed by: Andrzej Bartkowiak

         Ginger Snaps
Ginger Snaps
In "Ginger Snaps," two death-obsessed sisters are on the verge of womanhood. One of them is bitten by a werewolf, and we all know what happens next. Is puberty just as frightening and alienating as transforming into a werewolf? From the perspective of these two sisters, it is.

Starring: Emily Perkins, Mimi Rogers, Katherine Isabelle
Directed by: John Fawcett

         The Night of the Hunter
The Night of the Hunter
They don't make movies like this one anymore. Actually, they never made another movie like this one. Charles Laughton's only film as a director is a complete masterpiece, filled with surreal and haunting images. The story of a corrupt preacher on the trail of two children who know the location of a huge stash of money, "Night of the Hunter" continues to exert its influence across genre lines, with references turning up in movies as different as "Do the Right Thing," "Undertow," and all of Rob Zombie's directorial efforts.

Starring: Lillian Gish, Shelley Winters, Robert Mitchum
Directed by: Charles Laughton

         Premonition
Premonition
Want to watch Asian horror that doesn't feature ghosts with dripping hair? The second offering in Lions Gate Horror's "J-Horror Theater" DVD series, Norio Tsuruta's "Premonition" is based on a 30-year-old story about a "fear newspaper." A professor sees ephemeral newspaper clippings, all foretelling deadly events which soon come true. The very first one he sees involves his young daughter, which drives him to guilt and a search for answers -- is it possible to change destiny?

Starring: Hiroshi Mikami, Kazuko Yoshiyuki, Daisuke Ban
